In 2017, the Animal Adventure Park started livestreaming footage of April’s pregnancy and the giraffe garnered quite the online following.
About 1.2million viewers watched her give birth to a male calf, named Tajiri, that April. It was the animal’s fourth pregnancy.
In a Facebook post, the zoo expressed gratitude for “the outstanding collective care provided by the park’s veterinarians and animal care team” for “keeping April happy and healthy during her more than five-year stay at Animal Adventure.”

“April’s most recent veterinary exam identified the acceleration of April’s condition, prompting the determination that euthanasia was the humane and appropriate course of action,” the zoo said.
During April’s pregnancy, her giraffe cam was the second most live-viewed channel in the history of YouTube at the time, according to The New York Post.
The channel got more than 232million hits from February until April gave birth that spring.

Giraffes are typically pregnant for about 15 months.
April gave birth to one more calf after her viral pregnancy — Azizi. But that baby tragically died after suffering from a parasitic issue at just 18 months old.
After Azizi’s birth in 2019, the zoo announced that they were putting April on birth control to stop any future breeding as she got older.
