Oscar-winner Brad, 57, stayed in a posh suite at a top hotel and was given a private guided tour of an art gallery — despite it being closed to the public due to the pandemic.

Belgium is in the grip of its third wave of the virus and has the world’s third-highest death rate per capita.

Non-essential travel in and out of the country is illegal.

Arrivals must sign a declaration “on their honour” that their trip is for “purely professional reasons”. There is no suggestion Pitt is in Belgium illegally.

It is thought he was allowed in to “support” his friend, LA-based British artist Thomas Houseago, 49.

The pair have grown close during Brad’s divorce battle with Angelina Jolie Houseago is preparing an exhibition at the Royal Museums Of Fine Arts, home of the Manneken Pis statue.

The actor was pictured standing close to Houseago and another friend in front of Pieter Bruegel’s 1562 masterpiece The Fall of the Rebel Angels inside the famous gallery.

Belgium has a one-and-a-half metre distancing rule in place. Locals took to social media to blast the Hollywood star’s actions.

One said: “Non-essential trips are forbidden? Not if you’re rich! And don’t say he’s here to support his friend. People here can’t visit family members abroad, but celebs can do whatever they want. It’s scandalous.”

Another said: “It doesn’t sound essential to me. And why do you need to start hugging each other?”

It comes as Pitt was said to be “heartbroken” after Jolie, 45 pledged to “provide proof of domestic violence” in their divorce fight.
